TMS for Teens

Hope for Teens Struggling with Depression

Adolescence can be a challenging time, but for some teens, depression goes beyond the normal ups and downs of growing up. Depression can affect academic performance, friendships, family relationships, self-esteem, and overall quality of life.

When symptoms persist despite therapy, medication, or other interventions, families may feel unsure about what to do next.

At Advanced Psychiatry of Elgin, we offer TMS therapy for eligible adolescents ages 15 and older as an additional treatment option for depression.

Depression in adolescents may look different than it does in adults. Symptoms can include:

  • Persistent sadness or low mood
  • Increased irritability or frustration
  • Loss of interest in hobbies and activities
  • Social withdrawal
  • Difficulty concentrating in school
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Changes in appetite
  • Low motivation
  • Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness

These symptoms can impact academic performance, relationships, extracurricular activities, and emotional development. Many teens benefit from therapy, medication, or a combination of both. However, some continue to experience symptoms despite treatment.

Families may consider TMS when:

  • Depression symptoms remain despite treatment
  • Medications have provided limited benefit
  • Side effects from medication are difficult to tolerate
  • Additional treatment options are needed

Our providers perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether TMS may be an appropriate option for your teen. Our team works closely with teens and their families throughout the treatment process, providing education, guidance, and ongoing support. We monitor progress carefully and make individualized recommendations based on each patient’s unique needs.

We strive to create a welcoming and comfortable environment where teens feel safe, respected, and supported throughout their treatment journey. The goal of treatment is not simply reducing

symptoms, it is helping teens reconnect with the activities, relationships, and goals that matter most to them.

Is TMS Safe for Teens?

One of the most common questions parents ask is whether TMS is safe for their child.

TMS is FDA approved for adolescents ages 15 and older with depression and has been extensively studied as a non-invasive treatment option. Unlike medications, TMS does not circulate throughout the body and does not require anesthesia or sedation.

TMS is generally well tolerated, with the most common side effects being mild scalp discomfort or headache during treatment sessions. These side effects are typically temporary and often improve as treatment progresses.

Importantly, TMS is not associated with memory loss or cognitive impairment. Patients remain awake and alert throughout treatment and can return to school, extracurricular activities, and normal daily routines immediately after each session.

Our mission is to walk alongside patients and their families on their journey toward wellness, providing support every step of the way. If your teen continues to struggle with depression despite previous treatment efforts, our team can help determine whether TMS may be an appropriate option.
